Abstract The hippocampus of brain is vulnerable to various physical and chemical stressors. In the present study the authors have investigated selective vulnerability of neuron cell bodies in various sub fields of left and right lobes of mice hippocampus. Animals were exposed to immobilization, forced swimming, heat and cold stress daily for 2 h. Treatment was given till 20 days. Cresyl violet and fluorojade-B staining were performed to study the cytological damage on both left and right sides of hippocampus. Lactate dehydrogenase release was measured in left and right lobes of hippocampus to compare the extent of neuronal injury. Cell count of injured cells showed significant increase in right hippocampus of immobilization group and in the left hippocampus of swim stress group. Increased LDH activity was observed in the right hippocampal lobe of the mice exposed to immobilization stress and in the left hippocampal lobe of the mice exposed to swimming stress. The differential behavior of right and left hippocampal lobe to various stressors could be due to stress responsive neuron populations which are selectively vulnerable to different stressors or low availability of growth factors necessary for survival of the neurons or high differential flow of corticosterone under stress conditions. The study suggests that neuron cell population in right or left hippocampus are selectively responsive to different stressors.

About National Digital Library of India (NDLI)
NDLI logo

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
